Set Up a Minimal Launcher on Any Car Screen
Phone launchers are built for thumbs at 30 cm — widgets, folders, news feeds. A car screen is a different animal: glanced at, tapped with less precision (sometimes through gloves), often at night. KM Launcher is a home screen built for exactly that surface — and it's free, no root required.
What makes it car-friendly
- Fully transparent window — on a projected display the wallpaper shows through untouched, so the mirrored scene stays clean.
- Fixed low-distraction dark theme — it doesn't flip to white at noon or blind you at night; it just stays dark, deliberately.
- An editable grid that fits your screen — column count slides from 2–8 in portrait and 4–12 in landscape, stored separately per orientation, re-flowing live as you adjust.
- Drag to rearrange, slots stay put — icons shift out of the way as you drag; removing an app can leave an empty slot so your muscle memory survives.
- Sensible defaults — first launch auto-fills every launchable app sorted by name; newly installed apps surface at the top.
Setting it up
- Install KM Launcher (any Android 8.0+ device).
- Press Home and choose it as your default launcher when Android asks.
- Long-press anywhere to enter edit mode — adjust columns with the side drawer, drag tiles into place, clear slots you don't need.
Where it fits
- With KoalaMirror — as the home screen of your projected desktop, which is the pairing it was designed around.
- Aftermarket Android head units — replace a cluttered vendor launcher with something calm.
- Tablets and wall-mounted panels — anywhere a glanceable grid beats a busy phone launcher.
Standalone by design
The Launcher doesn't require KoalaMirror, root, or an account. It's a normal launcher app — install, set as default, done.
