Android Auto Mirroring Compatibility: What Works in 2026
Compatibility questions are the most common ones we get, and the answer has three layers: the phone, the Android Auto release, and the car. Only two of them actually matter.
The verified matrix
| Phone Android \ Android Auto | 16.7 | 16.8 | 17.0 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android 12L · 13 · 14 | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Android 15 · 16 | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
Every cell above is verified on real devices and emulators — not extrapolated. The floor is Android 12L (SDK 32); older phones are not supported.
The phone side
- Android 12L through 16, rooted (Magisk, KernelSU, or APatch) with a Zygisk runtime — ReZygisk is auto-provisioned if yours is missing.
- Google Mobile Services is required. Android Auto is a GMS component, so de-Googled ROMs without GMS can't run it at all — that's an Android Auto requirement, not ours.
- Android Auto updates itself through the Play Store, so your version will drift upward over time. New releases get verified against the matrix as they land.
The car side: nothing to install
KoalaMirror rides the standard Android Auto connection your car already supports. Factory head units, aftermarket Android Auto units — if Android Auto connects today, the mirror can ride along. The car's firmware is untouched, which also means there's nothing to undo at trade-in time.
Quick self-check
Phone on Android 12L+ with GMS, rooted, and your car already runs Android Auto? You're compatible. The 30-day free trial is the definitive test — no card required.
